about

This track is about a difficult teacher/student relationship. Though it is told only from the narrator's point of view, it is less my intention to have listeners "side" with the narrator than to show one kind of relationship that can be injurious, likely to both parties involved.

This is the "thinnest" track on the album, and it is a small miracle that we were able to get the take we needed in the time that we had. Still, I am happy with it.

lyrics

On the day that I turned 21 I left home.
Under the light of the December full moon I roamed.
I’m a broken young man, I can’t stay here.
I’m just swimming in and endless ocean of hopelessness and fear.
I’m lookin’ for a place where I know I’ll be safe.
Where people will know what I mean.
I’m tired, so tired of being afraid.
I think I just need a little space.

I heard about a place sitting in a valley not too far away.
And after seeing it in a dream one night I decided to head there one day.
I met the head honcho. She was this wise old woman, you see.
First time I met her I felt she could see to the bottom of me.

Well I felt I had found a person I could trust,
Who could help me out of this dark place.
So I listened to every last word that she said
And put it to practice with haste.

After stayin’ there a while, I was again able to see.
And climbing up a nearby mountain one day I had an, an epiphany!
I rushed down the mountain to tell my teacher just what I had seen.
I looked at her and I said “I have seen that we are all naturally free”.

Well, I could scarcely believe what happened next,
As her steely gaze cut me in two.
She dismissed every last word that I said,
Insulted me and called me a fool, oh-oh.

As you could imagine, I was all mixed up.
I knew what I had seen and felt but my doubt just would not stop.
I stopped sleepin’. My body, it just broke down.
So much for these high-falutin’ teachers of such wide reknown.

I thought that I had found a promised land
That someone else created for me.
Well, it took me burning that damn bridge down
To see the person I wanted to be, woah-oh.

Again, my brother Daniel was instrumental (no pun intended) in pulling this off. His drumming in the complex meter of this song was spot-on, especially during the shift at the end of the song.

I wrote the guitar solo at the end of the song; the longest scripted solo I have written to date.
